Changes are coming for the Melbourne Stars as they seek their next Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) coach. This comes after a less than satisfactory season and a parting of ways with coach Jonathan Batty. This marks their fifth search for a coach in seven years.
Early this week, the Melbourne Stars made an announcement. Coach Jonathan Batty and the team have agreed to split paths after the recent WBBL season didn’t go as planned. Things looked good at the beginning with two victories in three games. But then, they faced six straight losses. Their season ended prematurely due to a rain-cancelled game. The team ended up at the bottom of the league standings.
In the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Batty also guides the Delhi Capitals. He spent three seasons as the Stars’ coach. Under his guidance, they landed in sixth, seventh, and eighth place—not close enough to the WBBL finals. Stars General Manager Blair Crouch gave thanks on behalf of the team. He said, “We are grateful to Jonathan for being with the Stars for the past 3 years. We give our best wishes to Jonathan and his family. We believe our team has the potential to do well, yet we’ve yet to reach the WBBL finals.”

The Melbourne Stars’ path in the Women’s Big Bash League has been challenging. Despite being a consistent team in the game, they have only made the WBBL finals one time. In the 2020-21 season, with Trent Woodhill as coach, they got to the final round. But, they lost to Sydney Thunder. After that season, Woodhill moved on to a job with Cricket Australia. David Hemp, the team’s first coach, led the Stars for five seasons. He couldn’t take the team to the finals.
After Woodhill left, Jarrad Loughnan was the coach for 2021-22. Then Batty got the job. As of now, the Stars are one of only two WBBL teams that haven’t won a title yet. The other is the Hobart Hurricanes. Even though the Stars have had some great moments, they haven’t been able to play well when it was crucial. Feeling the heat, the Melbourne Stars are getting ready for their fifth coaching change in a short seven years. They hope to end their title-less run in the WBBL and reach the finals again.
