The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Ontario Online has come to a close with one last bracelet clipped around one last wrist. The series saw some spectacular online poker, played out across eight events on WSOP.ca.
Players from all across Ontario were able to play for WSOP gold from the comfort of their homes.
Last week, Sterling “Magical Panda” Webley won the 2023 WSOP Ontario Online Main Event, joining a rarified elite of online bracelet winners. His victory turned his $1,000 buy-in into $111,666.
However, this week, there was only one event left to complete—Event #8: $525* The Closer.
*All dollar amounts are in CAD unless otherwise specified.
Shahi Closes Out In The Closer
Event #8: $525 The Closer was a turbo event with half the prize pool put up as bounties. At the close of late registration, there were 565 entries in the field with the top 61 earning a share of the $282,500 prize pool.
After multiple Day 1s, the remaining field reconvened on Monday to play down to the winner.
Aria “Magnethius” Shahi came out on top, beating Arsen “TatoVHati” Mykhailyshyn heads up at a final table that saw the return of Michael “Mike Leah” Leah and bracelet winner Justin “Justin Ouimette” Ouimette to a 2023 WSOP Ontario Online final table.
The final hands saw Mykhailyshyn jam 7.7 million over the big blind of 1.2 million with 9♠8♠. Shahi called with roughly twice the chips and A♠3♦ in the hole. The board was perfunctory in killing Mykhailyshyn’s hopes as it rolled out A♦K♥4♥Q♦3♠.
Shahi won $16,504 plus $16,098 in bounties for a total prize of $32,602. Mykhailyshyn took home $16,475 (not including bounties) for his second-place finish.
