Resurgent Lions ready to finish the job
England have created a piece of history by advancing to their first major tournament final on foreign soil but they are only interested in finishing first at Euro 2024 and can complete their mission by overcoming Spain in Berlin.
It cannot be denied that Spain have been by far the most impressive team at Euro 2024 but international football history is littered with examples of outstanding teams who have not managed to get across the finish line.
At a tournament where so many teams have failed to inspire, Spain have delivered a string of slick, purposeful performances which have helped them to navigate the more difficult half of the draw.
However, their knockout successes over Germany and France were close run things, highlighting defensive vulnerabilities which England may be able to exploit.
Spain lost the shot count against the Germans and the French and were let off the hook on both occasions by the lack of a killer instinct from their opponents.
They may not be as fortunate against England, who have shown incredible resilience to come from behind in each of their last three matches.
England got off to a very slow start this summer, but they seem to be peaking at the right time and look ready to rise to their biggest challenge.
Foden can land the first blow
Phil Foden was close to being the hero of England’s semi-final success over the Netherlands but his performance levels continue to improve and he may have his moment on Sunday.
The Manchester City man lies second on England’s total shot tally with 12 and he looks a huge price at 11/1 to break the deadlock against Spain.
Rodri’s card count could increase
Rodri is tied with Switzerland’s Silvan Widmer at the top of Euro 2024’s card count and his caution tally could increase to four with a booking in the final.
Few players this summer have been more important to their team than Rodri, who does so much excellent work with and without the ball.
The 24-year-old always puts his team first and, in the context of Sunday’s final, that could mean delivering a yellow card challenge when the need arises.
