Taking the crown as Canada’s luckiest city is Regina – but what exactly makes its residents so fortunate? Well, the city boasts an impressive quality of life score of 178.7, setting its residents up for success and making it a top-tier place to call home. But the good fortune doesn’t stop there. Regina has the highest likelihood of producing celebrities, with ten famous faces for every 10,000 people. And, if sunshine is a sign of luck, Regina is shining bright, soaking up an impressive 2,318 hours of sun each year.
Oakville in Ontario comes in second place. This picturesque town, nestled between Toronto and Niagara, offers over 2,300 hours of sunshine per year, and its smaller population means the chances of making it big time are higher than in places such as Calgary and Edmonton. Oakville also boasts one of the highest quality of life scores in the top 10 at 179, suggesting residents are very happy with their luck when it comes to being able to call Oakville home.
Coming in third is Winnipeg, another hotspot for good fortune. Known as the ‘Gateway to the West’, this city not only opens up plenty of travel opportunities but also a strong chance of stardom, with ten famous faces for every 10,000 residents. And, when it comes to sunshine, Winnipeg takes the top spot, basking in a stunning 2,353 hours of sun per year – proving that the sky quite literally is the limit here.
Rounding off the top five, Kitchener in southeastern Ontario comes in fourth place whilst Windsor, also in Ontario, comes in fifth place.
On the flip side, Surrey and Hamilton and Vaughen rank at the bottom on the luck scale. Vaughan also has the lowest chance of becoming a celebrity, with just two famous faces for every 10,000 people living there. Meanwhile, Surrey has one of the lowest annual sunshine hours per year at 1,932. But luck can always turn around, and with plenty of potential, these cities still have plenty to offer.

When it comes to picking the winning numbers, Calgary stands out as the luckiest city in Canada. Those entering the local lottery here have an impressive 26% chance of winning – meaning nearly one in four wins come from this city. With odds like that, it’s no surprise that Calgary has earned itself this title.
Following behind is Montérégie, where entrants enjoy a solid 16.4% chance of hitting the jackpot. That’s nearly one in six lottery wins on its respective corporation coming from this city. Neighbouring city Montreal follows in third place, with a 15.6% chance of hitting the jackpot.
Luck, by nature, is entirely random and unpredictable, making it impossible to know when or where it will strike. However, for those living in these cities, fortune certainly seems to be in their favour.
Methodology
To find out Canada’s luckiest cities, we created a seedlist of 24 major Canadian cities, then ranked them based on the following metrics:
● Sunshine hours per year – weatherapi.com
● Number of famous people – We counted the number of famous people born in each location using Wikipedia results.
● Quality of life score – numbeo.com
We also analyzed recent wins from Canada’s five lottery corporations to identify the cities with the highest number of wins, calculating the percentage chance of winning based on their share of total wins. Wins are over $10,000. All available data taken from across 2024-2025.
