Mike Norvell was just as surprised as the recruiting world on Thursday evening.
Miami (Fla.) Central star defender Karon Maycock, a safety turned linebacker in the 2026 class, came off the board with a commitment to Florida State football.
“What stood out about FSU is how they never gave up on each other and are continuing to build the team piece by piece,” he told Rivals. “My relationship with the staff is great, I talk to them daily.
“It is mostly my head coach and position coaches like JP (John Papuchis), Pat Surtain and coach Tony White.”
The four-star linebacker projection has visited Tallahassee several times as a prospect, including back in January, and he will return for an official visit on June 20.
“When I visit, it feels like home,” Maycock said. “I’ll continue to be around the coaches and players to get an even better feel for Florida State.”
The newest Seminole marks the seventh verbal commitment for Norvell’s staff thus far, continuing the in-state trend for the program simultaneously. Each current pledge hails from the Sunshine State, stretching from the panhandle to the Miami area, as Maycock makes it a trio from Dade County alongside fellow four-star defenders Darryl Bell and Tedarius Hughes.
As is the case with each, FSU sees a versatile role for Maycock once he arrives in Tallahassee for good.
“They like me at nickel because I can play in the box and cover,” he said.
Other college programs are likely to continue to recruit Maycock, who has added several scholarship offers in the New Year, but he has long felt a strong pull from Florida State since initially picking up the offer nearly two years ago.
“Y’all got a great one coming,” he said. “Win or lose we’re still gonna put that work in and play our best.
“Go Noles!”
