After five months of thrilling action, the 2024 NFL season reaches its conclusion at Super Bowl 2025.
Super Bowl LIX will see the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs put everything on the line for a chance to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
The Chiefs are looking to secure an unprecedented ‘three-peat’ after winning the last two Super Bowls, one of them against the Eagles in the 2022 season.
Andy Reid’s team beat the Eagles 38-35 in February 2023, and then beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 after overtime in February 2024.
Kansas beat the Buffalo Bills 32-29 to reach this year’s Super Bowl, while the Eagles ran out 55-23 winners against the Washington Commanders.
The NFL betting odds for the big game are sure to be very close all the way up until kickoff as the two best teams in the league face off for the biggest price of all.
What is the Super Bowl?
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the world’s premier American football competition.
The Super Bowl takes place in February each year, and is the final game of a season that traditionally begins in the first week of September.
The game sees the National Football Conference (NFC) champions take on the American Football Conference (AFC) champions. These are the two leagues that make up the NFL, each consisting of 16 teams.
The Super Bowl comes at the end of the play-offs, a single-elimination tournament that sees the seven teams with the best regular-season record from each conference compete for a place in the big game.
Why is it called the Super Bowl?
When the NFL merged with the American Football League in 1966, it was decided that the champions from each league would compete in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.
When Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt began referring to the game as the ‘Super Bowl’, the American media immediately tagged along.
Hunt claimed the name came to him when he was watching his children play with a Super Ball toy, and never expected the idea to stick.
The game officially became the Super Bowl in 1968, the third iteration of the AFL-NFL championship showdown.
Where does the Super Bowl take place?
The location of each Super Bowl is decided by the NFL, usually three to five years before each event.
The game has always been played in a city that hosts an NFL franchise at that time, although the possibility of an overseas Super Bowl has been discussed.
Previously, teams were allowed to bid for the right to host the Super Bowl, but this practice came to an end in 2018.
The decision is now made solely by the NFL, with a preferred location selected before that team submits a proposal, which is then ratified by the league.
There are several criteria that must be met for a stadium to host the Super Bowl, including a minimum of 70,000 seats.

Who are the players to watch at Super Bowl 2025?
Both rosters are stacked with talent, but the biggest name is Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs star is set to make his fifth starting appearance in a Super Bowl and he will look to lead by example as he always does for his team.
His partnership with tight end Travis Kelce used to be the talk of the town before the latter started dating singer Taylor Swift, but Kelce normally performs at his best in the playoffs and in the biggest game of all.
Mahomes and his team-mates have proved time and time again they can handle the pressure when it matters most, and it is the Eagles who have to prove they also belong on the big stage.
Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley has enjoyed an incredible first season with the Eagles, finishing the regular season as the leading rusher in the NFL.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts will be in Mahomes’ shadow, but he has the ability to dominate a game on his own. Eagles wide receivers, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith will be tough to pin down, while tight end Dallas Goedert could impress against a Chiefs defence that has struggled to contain tight ends all season.
