England’s best Test wicket-taker, James Anderson, is returning to his professional career, signing a one-year contract extension with Lancashire. The club has been a home for the 43-year-old pacer.
“This club has played a huge part in my life since I was a teenager. To wear the Red Rose again and play in front of our Members and supporters will be truly special,” he said.
Anderson last played in July for England in the West Indies Test, then took retirement from his professional playing career to coach the national team. If you listen to his Tailenders podcast, you are aware of how he expresses his love and passion for cricket and regularly talks about returning to the field. But not just on his podcast he recently shared “I am incredibly excited to sign this contract with Lancashire and resume playing professional cricket again next season.”
James has been bowling with the national team, staying fit, and preparing to hit the Emirates Old Trafford this summer.
“I love playing at Emirates Old Trafford and to have the chance to walk out and bowl in front of our Members and supporters again this summer is going to be really special.”
Although Anderson went unsold in the recent IPL auction following the end of his ECB contract, he has now officially signed the deal to play County Championship and T20 Blast for Lancashire. He will be playing T20 format after a decade-long retirement.
As of now, Anderson is in Abu Dhabi with the national team, preparing them for the white-ball tour to India; next month, he will be joining the coaching staff for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, Mark Chilton, said he has been in an open dialogue with Jimmy.
“It is fantastic news for all connected with the club that he has chosen to continue his playing career with Lancashire. From speaking to Jimmy recently, it became clear that his desire to resume playing professional cricket was strengthening every day and he was just desperate to get back out on the park.”
Sharing the dressing room with cricket’s all-time legend and England’s leading wicket-taker will be an incredible opportunity for the squad.
