Destructive Los Angeles wildfires have led some Las Vegas hotels to offer reduced rates for evacuees.
Treasure Island Las Vegas Hotel is offering guests impacted by the fires a room for $79 a day through January 31.
In addition, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, where hospitality workers remain on strike, is cutting as much as 50% off rates, as well as giving free parking and a deal for dogs that started on Thursday and runs through February 3.
Also, Resorts World Las Vegas has a 35% discount for those impacted by the wildfires.
MGM Resorts cut 35% off room rates. Other discounts are available at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas and the South Point Hotel.
Airbnb is working with 211LA to provide no-cost housing to those leaving Southern California because of the wildfires. Airbnb hosts in and around Las Vegas are taking in evacuees.
But a word of caution from Vital Vegas — for those leaving California with their pets, if they aren’t dogs.
Shame on Las Vegas casinos for gouging California fire escapees if they want to check in with pets. Guests are being charged hundreds of dollars for cats and other non-dog pets,” Vital Vegas posted this week.
Wildfire Update
As of Friday, 10 people have died from the wildfires as they enter their fourth day. More than 9,000 structures were damaged or destroyed. In total, some 180,000 residents were evacuated.
There are several wildfires impacting Southern California. The Pacific Palisades fire appears to be the most serious. Some 19,978 acres were damaged by Friday morning, and the fire was 6% contained.
The Eaton fire burned 13,690 acres. The fire wasn’t at all contained by Friday morning.
The Kenneth fire burned 960 acres. As of Friday morning, the fire was 35% contained.
The Sunset fire burned 60 acres and was 100% contained. The Hurst fire burned 771 acres. As of Thursday night, it was 37% contained. The Lidia fire burned 394 acres and is 75% contained.
Looting has been a problem in the evacuated areas. More than 20 people were arrested.
Nevada Firefighters in California
A group of firefighters from Nevada temporarily relocated to the Los Angeles area to help California fire crews as they battle the deadly wildfires.
I’m grateful for the bravery of our firefighters and for the swift response from our state and local partners. Please join me in praying for the safety of our first responders and for immediate relief for the families and communities displaced by these wildfires,” Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, R, said in a statement.
As of midweek, they include four strike teams and one task force. That equals 25 engines, and between 110 and 125 fire personnel.
In addition, more firefighters are departing from the Clark County Fire Department, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, and Pahrump Valley Fire & Rescue.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada will be serving in Los Angeles for two weeks, too.
Celebrities Lose Homes
Two well-known celebrities, who are known for past performances in Las Vegas, lost homes in Southern California this week due to the wildfires. They are Billy Crystal and Paris Hilton.
Words cannot describe the enormity of the devastation we are witnessing and experiencing,” Crystal said in a recent statement. “We ache for our friends and neighbors who have also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy.”
“Janice and I lived in our home since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away. We are heartbroken of course but with the love of our children and friends we will get through this.”
He described Pacific Palisades as a “resilient community of amazing people and we know in time it will rise again. It is our home.”
Hilton said she was watching the news with her family and saw on live TV their beachfront home in Malibu burn to the ground.
That was “something no one should ever have to experience,” she said in a statement.
