The England Men’s Cricket Managing Director Rob Key revealed that Jofra Archer’s Test return is likely to be pushed back next year, due to his upcoming participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Key expressed worry that Archer’s IPL involvement would delay him by “a couple of months” in his Test match training but conceded that it was economic and regulatory realities that prevented the ECB from denying Archer IPL play.
Archer has not featured in a Test since February 2021, and he’s been out with prolonged back and elbow injuries for most of the last three years. But 2024 brought a change of pace, and the fast bowler never picked up an injury during the year, giving him hope for England’s most important Test series against India in summer 2025. His recent ECB contract extension which extends beyond the 2025-26 Ashes further solidifies his role as a long-term England player.
As per new IPL rules, players who miss the mega-auction face disqualification for future mini-auctions, thereby excluding Archer from subsequent selections had he not opted out in 2025. The cost of making such a move would have been huge, especially when Archer is one of cricket’s highest paid franchise players.
Archer originally featured on the IPL’s longlist for the auction but was pulled off the shortlist due to ECB fitness concerns. But the BCCI had the rules clear enough to allow Archer to rejoin the shortlist. So a bidding war erupted and Rajasthan Royals picked him up for INR 12.5 crore (£1.18 million).

Rob Key described the ECB’s decision: “We were like, ‘Well, maybe you should miss the IPL this year and prepare yourself.’ He would have paid a high price to have missed the auction. It wasn’t like a light breeze to ride.“
The financial appeal of franchise cricket continues to erode the international cricket boards, and Archer’s story is no different. Key emphasised the challenge of finding a balance between players’ lucrative franchise deals and their commitments to the national team. “We don’t want to be in a situation where centrally-contracted England players leave English cricket,” he said. He also expressed concern that Test cricket would become a non-negotiable game for players with multi-million-dollar year-round franchise deals.
Despite these setbacks, Key reiterated Archer’s support for England and revealed that the pacer had first been willing to rest up and get his recovery work done before missing out on the IPL. The ECB had hoped to ease Archer into Test cricket by allowing him to represent Sussex at county level in April and May, setting him up for England’s summer series against India in June and July.
Rob Key remains confident of Archer’s Test cricket future, stressing his merit as one of England’s best bowlers. But he also added that Archer’s rehabilitation should be controlled as he is recovering from injury.‘We want him to come out. He’d never have more than one or two Tests this summer probably — three at best’ Key said. He also clarified that Archer would not be expected to play in the Tests against India, and that it would depend on his fitness and workload before the series.

The ECB are confident in Archer’s long-term potential, which is reflected in his new contract. The board will also have a strong focus on a cautious optimism, expecting Archer to deliver on his promise of being a match-winner in the IPL and Test formats.
Jofra Archer’s double commitment highlights the increasingly entangled environment of modern cricket, with boards, players and franchises fighting to balance competing interests. For England, the priority will still be to get a healthy Archer into key games, even if his return timeline gets adjusted.
