The Sports Tribunal in New Zealand has issued a month-long suspension to veteran cricketer Doug Bracewell. This came after a drug test during a T20 match that showed cocaine and its metabolite benzoylecgonine in his blood. It’s a hard to overlook at drug ause in sports and Bracewell’s road to recovery.
At a Super Smash game, Bracewell tested positive for cocaine on January 13. Though he admitted to using it the night before, he insists it didn’t affect his performance. However, the tribunal and New Zealand’s Sport Integrity Commission disagreed, deeming it “in-competition” – a clear breach of rules.
The Tribunal later opted for a softened penalty after assessing evidence from both sides. Bracewell’s commitment to a drug treatment program played a key role in this decision. His sentence was initially intended for three months but has been shortened to one month.
Bracewell is a star in his own right, with 74 wickets from 28 Tests since his debut in 2011. He’s also known for his game-winning performances in Test cricket. Despite being away from New Zealand cricket since March 2023, he hasn’t quit the sport.
Looking forward, Bracewell’s cricket journey is not over yet; he is preparing for two major T20 leagues next. First, the Abu Dhabi T10 for New York Strikers, and then the SA20 early next year with Joburg Super Kings. This showcases his continuous demand on the international scale.
