The Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York, renowned for its substantial influence in the hospitality and gaming industry since its opening in 1993, has launched the most extensive expansion in its history. With an investment of $370 million, the project, titled The Next 30 or Evolution, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment, signifying a pivotal growth phase for the Oneida Indian Nation-owned property.
Strategic expansion to boost convention and hospitality services:
This ambitious project began with the recent arrival of 73 tons of steel, marking a significant step forward in the construction process. Turning Stone Enterprises, the business arm of the Oneida Indian Nation, has contracted with 26 different local contractors from Upstate New York, all tasked with various specialties including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services, reinforcing the casino’s commitment to regional economic development.
The Evolution project is strategically designed to transform Turning Stone into the state’s largest resort convention destination. This includes substantial enhancements to its conference and event capabilities, which are already operating at nearly full capacity. Notably, the expansion plan meticulously avoids any modifications to the existing gaming facilities, thereby preserving the core entertainment experience while expanding other service offerings.
The expansion will introduce several key facilities and upgrades, expected to be fully operational by 2027:
As Indian Gaming reported back in 2023, the expansion at Turning Stone Resort Casino includes several notable projects slated to enhance guest experiences and service capacity by 2027. Among these is The Grand Expo, a sprawling 165,000-square-foot conference facility designed to double the resort’s current events space and introduce versatile new outdoor areas suitable for a broader range of events and gatherings. Additionally, the expansion will see the addition of The Crescent Hotel, which will augment the resort’s luxury accommodations with 258 elegantly designed guest rooms and suites. To elevate the culinary experience, Salt Seafood & Raw Bar, a new upscale restaurant, will offer fine dining with an emphasis on seafood and raw dishes. Furthermore, the construction of a significant 1,500-space parking garage will address the needs of the increasing number of visitors, effectively doubling the current parking capacity.
These enhancements are built on the foundation of recently completed phases, including the NY Rec & Social Club, a modern nightlife venue; a Sportsplex with extensive facilities for golf and indoor pickleball; and an expanded retail area, all designed to improve the guest experience significantly.
Economic impact and job creation:
Ray Halbritter, the nation representative and CEO of Turning Stone Enterprises, highlighted the transformative nature of the project, stating, “As the Turning Stone Evolution continues to transform the resort, it is also transforming our role as an economic engine for Upstate New York.” The project is poised to create 3,600 construction and related jobs, generate an economic impact exceeding $600 million, and provide substantial tax revenues of $22 million to state and local governments.
According to Syracuse.com, Turning Stone is acutely aware of the potential disruptions that construction might cause to guests. To mitigate this, Joel Barkin, the nation’s vice president for communications, reassured that thorough measures are in place. Guests will continue to use the main entrance on Patrick Road, where clear signage will direct them to available parking and venue locations, ensuring the resort experience remains unaffected during the expansion phases.
