Auburn has been making it tough on four-star wide receiver Sam Turner for weeks.
After his official visit over the weekend — another trip back to The Plains — the flip is in. Turner, the No. 38-ranked WR in the Rivals250 out of Decatur (Ga.) Southwest Dekalb High School outside of Atlanta, has switched his commitment from Georgia Tech to the Tigers.
Auburn has been keeping its foot on the gas for the 6-foot-2, 185-pound receiver since extending an offer in June days after declaring for the Yellow Jackets. Turner was on campus for Big Cat Weekend in July and returned earlier this fall for an official visit. His official visit over the weekend put the Tigers over the top.
“We’ve been continuing to build a relationship with Coach (Hugh) Freeze and the Auburn staff, and it’s coming together,” he told Rivals.
“He was straightforward with me and my dad, and we’re the kind of people that like being straightforward, so that’s what turned us on to Auburn,” Turner said of Freeze.
Freeze and Auburn wide receivers coach Marcus Davis have continued to press for Turner throughout the summer and into his senior season.
The combination of both coaches’ expertise made for an intriguing fit in The Plains.
“Basically, Hugh Freeze is a wide receiver guy and has produced a lot of NFL wide receivers,” Turner detailed. “From the last 10 drafts, he had nine get drafted in the first round, including DK Metcalf, AJ Brown, Van Jefferson.”
Davis’ background was an eye-opener for Turner.
“Coach Davis is a WR guy. He was a co-OC at Texas State, so they have a lot of things going in their favor,” he said. “He played the position and also played at Auburn. He sees things like a receiver because he played the game. He’s a young coach, he’s smart, he’s intelligent, and that’s what turned me onto Coach Davis … they build everything off of faith and I’m big on my faith. They’ve held onto that and that’s stuck with me. I’d fit in easily in that room with the receivers they have, the team they have. Guys I’ve competed against and they’ve told me I’d be a great fit over there.”
