The £61.8 million project, which was proposed to the Club’s 18,000-strong membership at its AGM last week. Moreover, it will improve catering, hospitality, and accessibility while boosting overall ground capacity by 1,100 seats.
MCC Members’ approval comes after Westminster City Council’s Planning Committee unanimously agreed to grant planning and permission. This is will be for the Tavern and Allen project at its meeting on April 16.
MCC is now ready to commence building on the refurbishment. Thus it is scheduled to begin in late September, near the end of the cricket season. The Tavern and Allen stand renovation comes after the successful redevelopment. In addition to considerable enhancement to the Compton and Edrich stands. It cost £53 million and were finished in 2021.
John Graham Construction Ltd. was the best bidder for the main contract to build the building. Over the next few weeks, MCC will finalize the contract with them.
As part of the renovation, both stands will get an extra level. Moving the sign to a different spot in the Allen stand will make this easier. In the Tavern stand, a new cantilevered seating level on the fourth floor will be added on top of the original structure that is being kept and pushed back to the site boundary.

Lord’s cricket ground expansion: Construction timeline and project scope
In line with MCC’s commitments to sustainability, the project was built to meet the BREEAM “Excellent” standard. What’s more, it is planned to keep the steel frame of the current Tavern stand. This will save 613.7 tonnes of CO2, which is the same as taking 18,361 trains from London to Bath.
The current Allen Stand was built in the 1930s and will be torn down completely. Members are also happy about the plan to tear down for the lord’s cricket ground expansion. They will rebuild a link bridge between the Allen Stand and the Pavilion in the upper level.
The architects WilkinsonEyre came up with the unique roof profile of the Tavern stand. This is another example of the innovative architecture around Lord’s.
Hence, to finish building the new stands on time, they will have to be put on hold during the cricket seasons of 2025 and 2026.
“The redevelopment of the Tavern and Allen stands will complete our stand development program. As part of this program, we have updated facilities at Lord’s to keep the Ground a world-class cricket venue.”
Robert Ebdon, Director of Estates for the MCC, said,
The stands will also add to the Club’s already strong green credentials. We’re looking forward to working closely with our consultants, Buro Happold, Gardiner & Theobold, and Arcadis, during the construction phase.
