While NBA and NFL fans often spend the majority of their time absorbed in the on-court or on-field excitement, there are other factors which contribute to the gameday experience. And perhaps one of the most significant is how comfortable and clean the stadium is!
From concession stands to restrooms and seating areas, cleanliness plays a huge role in visitor enjoyment and satisfaction. So, we decided to find out which teams in the NBA and NFL have the cleanest stadiums…
To do so, we looked at various factors, from the percentage of reviews containing negative words such as ‘dirty’, ‘stinky’ or ‘filthy’ to those containing positive words like ‘clean’, ‘tidy’ and ‘spotless’.
Once the data for the factors was collected, the factors were then normalized to provide each one with a score between 0 and 1. These normalized values were then summed to give each location a score out of four, and the higher the score, the cleaner the stadium!
So, without further ado, let’s dive into which NBA and NFL stadiums are highly rated for their cleanliness.

Methodology
This dataset contains two rankings, looking at the cleanest NBA and NFL arenas. To do this, 4 different factors were used. Once the data for the factors was collected, the factors were then normalized, to provide each factor with a score between 0 and 1.
If data was not available, a score of 0 was given. The normalized values were then summed, to give each location a total score out of 4. The locations were then ranked from highest to lowest, based on their total scores.
The factors used are as follows:
• TA Negative – The percentage of reviews for each location on Tripadvisor that contained the negative terms: “dirty”, “stinky”, “filthy”
• TA Positive – The percentage of reviews for each location on Tripadvisor that contained the positive terms: “clean”, “tidy”, “spotless”
• Yelp Negative – The percentage of reviews for each location on Yelp that contained the negative terms: “dirty”, “stinky”, “filthy”
• Yelp Positive – The percentage of reviews for each location on Yelp that contained the positive terms: “clean”, “tidy”, “spotless”
The factors were indexed as follows:
• TA Negative – High values get a low score. Low values get a high score.
• TA Positive – High values get a high score. Low values get a low score.
• Yelp Negative – High values get a low score. Low values get a high score.
• Yelp Positive – High values get a high score. Low values get a low score.
